You need to find the size you can handle. Most rent them from garden centers or other rentel venues, some are purchased. Get one that you can physically man handle. You don’t want one to crawl off on its own. You set the tines to a certain depth, and let it dig By holding the handles behind the tines. Go slow and beware of flying rocks. Ear protectors are good to have, I like the little blue or purple ear plugs. It may take a few trips over the garden area to get all clumps out. If you have had your soil tested and amendments were recommended till them in after all the clumps are gone.
by the way....why are you wanting to till up the yard? Laying sod? Or garden plot for veg, flowers?
A rototiller is not hard to use. Wear old shoes where both of your entire feet are covered. You walk behind the tiller like a lawnmower gone wild. So make sure you have a good grip at all times. I don't know how big the yard is, but I would work on one section at a time. Once you get the hang of it, you'll be fine. Best of luck to you.
Make sure you rake the area really good...maybe go over it a few times before tilling. Our experience is that you just get out there and do it. Then you have to rake out the weeds and grass and level it off by raking.
Once you have the first layer softened, it would be a good time to mix in some top soil, sand and maybe watering crystals with the tiller.
This is a job that just takes dedication and a lot of effort. Depending on the size of your yard, you might find it is less expensive to purchase a good tiller instead of renting one.
