Please complete your question so we know what you are referring to.
Hi Jen, My sons made a raised garden for me last year. They used landscape timbers for the box. Then they put weed fabric down. (The box is about 20 inches deep). Then they filled it with a mixture of: One-third soil, one-third manure and one-third sand. The sand is for water retention. Jen, I have been gardening for 30 plus years and I have NEVER had such a great garden. I used the deep-root watering method using a soaker hose. I watered it for 20 minutes every morning. The best tip I can give you is to go out and gently jiggle your plants. Just give each stalk a few flicks with your fingers. This will help to pollinate your plants. Without pollination, your plants will yield 20% - 30% of its ability. With pollination they will yield 85% - 95% of their capacity. Big difference, right? I hope this helps you.
Hello again Jen, No, you don't HAVE to use chemical free timbers, but you REALLY should. Another choice might be to paint it right away using outdoor paint or use a sealer on it. Since it will be outside, the wood will rot if left untreated. I hope this helps you. Feel free to let me know if I can help with anything else.
