If you're thinking of using pallets as raised planters, you want to avoid any that are chemically treated to prevent rot because the chemicals can leach into the soil. That being said, typical wood pallets exposed to the elements and dirt won't last more than a couple seasons. I would recommend using 6' cedar fence pickets because they're naturally rot & bug resistant, inexpensive and designed to use outdoors.
