What is the best and simple way to start your own compost?

you also need a compost starter..it’s a mix of bacteria that helps the decomposition of the veggie mater. I know of 2 ways to do this....commercial compost starter, or sneaking a shovel or 2 of compost from a neighbor. If there is any oily stuff...don’t put it the compost pile. Don’t put meat on a compost pile. Only those thing which were growing and green. Paper is made of tree pulp...go ahead and add it. Tin foil...er no.

im in a colder climate....and I gave the compost a chance to break down...it didn’t, until the right mix of bacteria hit it.

It's not that difficult. Pick an out of the way spot. Throw all organic matter as you have it, fallen leaves, grass clippings, prunings, cut to smaller sizes if necessary. Just keep tossing as things come available. If any rabbit or chicken manure is available to you add that, if not no biggie. NEVER put in food scraps or dog droppings. Turn from time to time. You will have the best compost/leaf mold ever!

I used seaweed in Alaska as compost. All I had to do was rinse it well. It's not that hard.

Thanks for that. You are the very first person that has said Never put food scraps in, why. I also have a smallish compost bin that I just found a place to put it. Going to take our Seniors to the beach tomorrow so maybe pick up a bit of seaweed to put in. Still quite warm here in NZ, autumn still thinking about whether to turn up or not.
