I’ve heard that straw is the best. Also, you can put down thick layers of newspaper, wet it down good, then put a thin layer of mulch over it. Probably would look better than straw and it does keep the weeds away.

  • While straw may be best, it is too breezy where I live and would be strewn all over the neighborhood within 24 hours. Mulch is the preferred medium where I live.

    Mulch!

Straw, especially if it is not clean will have seeds in it. The only thing I use straw for is in my strawberry beds to overwinter them. I use about 4 inches of straw and it holds enough warmth under the snow to keep the plants alive. Straw also draws some nourishment from the soil as it disintegrates.

Mulch is good to hold moisture and to keep weeds down. Use about 3 inches of mulch in your garden. As it disintegrates, it also adds some nourishment to the soil. You can turn it under and add new in the spring to keep your garden looking nice.
