Basically, composting is using organic waste (vegetable peelings, etc.) to break down into a mix that will enrich your soil. Janet's link should help you get started. It's a benefit to our environment (and your garden) to compost, but, to give a detailed explanation I would suggest a link such as Janet's and to search here on Hometalk. There's tons of info there.

Just make sure not to add animal based products to your compost including egg shells. Egg shells should be broken down separately. I put the crushed shells in a sealed container with water and after a few weeks strain the water onto my plants Good luck.

Composting is about mixing and matching, like cooking, add the ingredients, turn, and enjoy the results... Some experts talk about the correct percentages of brown vs green materials, you can google it... At first I was following those instructions to the T, but then I decided that improvisation is also important, and to enjoy the whole process, like journey is as/or more important than the destination... Whatever you do try to avoid adding animal fat, it decays very slowly and it attracts vermins and unwelcomed guests... I add egg shells, which, decay slow so, if I have the time I crush them a bit before tossing them into the mix... I do turn my compost, not religiously but when I can, especially before or after a rainy day... My compost has a very healthy smell, no seriously, it does not stink, no flies, or nasty insects... There are the healthy kind of insects, that help with decomposition... Composting is a fun activity, important to every garden, and friendly to Mother Earth... Happy composting!

You don't need to make it - just add food waste directly into your planting area. This is an old time method and it works great. Learn more on my blog Garden Up Green under Garden/Dirt Simple
