What vegetables would grow well in a vertical garden?

I want to add more vegetable garden space, but I have a small yard. I am thinking about making a vertical garden. I am thinking about building something like the picture, which can be found on bonnieplants.com. I do not have a wall or fence to attach it to, so I want something free-standing. Most of the vertical gardens that I have seen are for herbs or flowers. I want to use this for vegetables, or maybe fruit. I don't have any interest in growing herbs. Does anyone know what vegetables would grow well in something like this?

Depending on how deep your containers are, there are lots of options! Do remember that containers need watering on a regular basis too! Here's some info for you on the types of plants to grow in containers http://faq.gardenweb.com/discussions/2766004/what-vegetables-can-i-grow-in-a-container

We have vertical hydroponic gardens. You can grow nearly anything that you grow in the ground. Cucumbers, snap peas, tomatoes, numerous kinds of lettuce, kale, strawberries, numerous kinds of peppers, herbs, list goes on.

@Karen Higgins I would love to try hydroponic gardening someday, but I'm not quite ready to take that leap, yet. But knowing that you can grow practically anything with hydroponics, may get me to jump on that band wagon. Thanks for the info!

@Jolene Hamby Great idea! I am definitely going to plant some lettuce, but I live alone and I can only eat so many salads. :-) I am hoping to plant some other things that I can freeze or can.

Also consider a big pot or a window box type thing with a freestanding trellis in it. The trellis would allow you to grow scarlet runner beans or any veg that grows on a vine.

@Catherine MacGregor That's a great idea, too! I hadn't considered that, but you are right, there are so many plants that grow on vines.

Carrots, lettuce, radishes, green onions, you could grow a few herbs to cook with, strawberries do well in this type of planting. Steer clear of Tomatoes, Corn, Beans, Cucumbers, most pepper plants,Asparagus. Some grow too tall for this, trailing plants will grow and take over, Asparagus takes three years before it produces.

if you want tomatoes, runner beans, cukes, sugar baby water melon, cantaloupe- you can use large pot or grow bags and trellis.
