Why do my trees keep sending out suckers? What can I do to stop this?

  • That is what trees do! Nature at work. All you can do is remove the suckers as they appear. No way to stop them. If you kill the suckers, you kill the tree.

    Hi Diane, Trees send out suckers when they are under stress. Drought is another reason this may be happening. And improper pruning could be another reason. I use my pruning shears to remove suckers. Get as close to the base of the tree as you can without cutting the trunk. Just snip the suckers right off. Best of luck to you.

    Prune them off in early winter, but before the first freeze, so a freeze will kill off the branch.

    You can prune the suckers and use Tordon to put on the cut end of the sucker. TOrdon may be purchased at a local farm store. You can search for it at Amazon.
