Why does our garden not do good? Could it be the soil?

The plants do not grow well. What can we do to improve the soil so we can have a good garden? Radishes just go to seed and we don't get any radishes.

  • Absolutely could be the soil. You can purchase soil testing kits then amend as necessary. I amend the soil every planting season for optimum results.

This is one of the most common radish growing problems. The "hotness" of radishes results from the length of time they have grown rather than from their size. The radishes either grew too slowly or are too old. Radishes like cool weather, but it needs to be warm and wet enough for them to fill out before the weather heats up. They need to grow fast and be harvested as soon as they reach their mature size. Unlike carrots and beets, they do not get sweeter if stored in the ground. But if you do feel that the soil is an issue, my favorite solution and certainly very cost-effective one earthworms you can buy them and introduce them into your garden soil and they will keep your soul so amazingly rich without you doing anything . I live in Las Vegas and earthworms are not commonly found here , so adding them back into the garden brings dramatic effects . people cannot figure out why I can grow the things I grow and how amazingly I grow them , it’s the worms .I don’t know where you live maybe you already have plenty.

worms will not stay in an area unless there is organic matter for them to eat and moisture to soften the soil. Add compost, and bury your kitchen scraps (no fat or meat products) to amend the soil and keep the worms home. Never add chemical fertilizers because it burns the worms and they die.

  • Hi Frances - Our soil dramatically improved after we started composting. Here's a great 101 article. Good luck! Hugs, Holly

Gardening is a difficult job. You have to know about every plant you put out to get the best results. I can grow beautiful flowers but not even tomatoes.

But as a kid I worked very hard in my Mother's garden...we sure did eat good!!!! I remember how to plow a garden, set up rows, set up terrace rows and how to put in the seeds and hoe it...then we followed directives from Mother when to plant what and when to pick it!! I know nothing!!!

Check with your county government to see if they have a master gardener or extension agent. Many county do and they can be a big help as they are educated in your local growing problems.
