Wood wine boxes as planters

I bought a few wood wine boxes from a local package store and want to use them as planters outdoors. I don't want to paint or decorate the outsides of the boxes because I like the look of the plain wood. I need to know how to treat the insides before putting in a planting mix. I might stain the outsides or just leave them to the elements. I plan to grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers in them, so I can't use anything on the inside that would be harmful. Any ideas? I am grateful for your help. Thank you.

You may want to use a brush-on acrylic sealer to treat the inside of the boxes. Make sure to get a water based sealer. These sealers can be found at craft stores like Michael's. They are non-toxic and come in either gloss or matte finish. Let it dry completely before adding the soil> overnight to 24 hours is best.

If you want to plant ediblesyouwillneed to line then with edible pool /pond food liner then add drainage holes.also elevate them so the water drains out and doesn't smother the roots

@Funnygirl, thank you for replying. I know I will need to drill holes for drainage, and I had thought of lining the boxes, but I didn't know with what. I like your suggestion. I'll have to find where I can buy edible pool/pond liners as I didn't know they existed. Thank you again.

I'm not sure where to find them either.I would look on line or maybe a pond supply store.I purchased a file cabinet that I plan tousle as a planter turned on its back and wand to utilize the drawers for growing edible plants in them and someone else suggested this idea to me also.made sense to me.
  • You can use the vinyl liners that they construct shower bases with. In the plumbing section of the big box stores you will find this gray product on large rolls. Its sold by the foot. They also sell an adhesive to glue the edges together. Its best if you can fold the vinyl into a box shape instead of cutting and gluing it. But seeing what your using it for, glue will work just fine. Put a small layer of stone on the bottom to hold it down into place until you get the soil in. Inexpensive material.
