Palm tree stumps repurposed

We had a dead Palm tree trunk that we cut into smaller stumps.
The center was a little rotten so we scraped the middle out and added a pot tray to hold the dirt. Next we drilled a few holes with a paddle bit along the base and added succulents.
Here is another stump that was rotten all the way thru so we added a clay pot and succulents. Cheap, fun and such a pleasure to create.

So I have 4 large palm trunk pieces that I'm trying to make into climbing/stepping stones for the kids, but I can not find ANY info on how to sand or preserve them, could you please help? They are also very large so I need to cut at least two in half, do I use a chain saw or will a hand saw work. As far as sanding goes, did you use a power sander or sand paper? If you could give me any info to help me I would sure appreciate it!! Thanks! And btw, your planters are beautiful, I may try that with one of the pieces :)

Sorry for the delay. I used a chainsaw to cut the stump. Then used a drill w 2" cup bit for holes on the side and to dig out the center of tree. Good luck
