Can I cut sweet potatoes in half for growing sweet potato vines?

I know that when placing sweet potatoes in water for growing vines, one end of the potato should be placed in water. Is it possible to cut the potato in half to make two ends to place in water as per directions? It would help save as the plant vines at the garden center are $3.33 each-rather costly when one needs a large quantity for a spot. Thanks.

yes you can. when I cook sweet potatoes I cut off the ends and stick in pot of soil. Wala you have a vine to stake.
You don't even need to plant in water unless you are growing inside. cut into pieces with eyes, leave them to "scab" in the air at least 24 hours and plant per recommendations.

I grow sweet potatoes every year in my garden or in ex-large planters on my porch by: 1. Cut the sweet potatoes or yams in pieces - leaving at least 2 eyes on each piece. 2. Plant the pieces in the soil about 8" deep and about 12" apart. 3. Water the area well then water again only AFTER the plants have grown up above the soil. 4. After plants have grown above the soil, keep watered - do not let the soil dry out completely as potatoes take a lot of water to grow properly - and BEFORE the first fall frost, harvest the sweet potatoes or yams, whichever you planted.
