Dying Tomato Plants

It is very hot (100°F) the last week or so and I have been watering my Tomatoes daily, they seem to be dying back. Could I be overwatering? Any Suggestions?

  • No, they are just going into survival mode. Keep them well watered. They will recover when the Temps cool down. I was out at 5:30 am this morning making sure all the plants had enough moisture to make it through the day. Predicted 117° here today, everything is limping along. When it is this hot (and I have no humidity to speak of, less than 10% - normal is 50% to 60%), I water in the evening when the sun goes down to perk them back up.

Give them some Miracle Grow it may pep them back a bit. Water early morning. A teaspoon of Epsom salts (cover with soil) at the base of the plants may also help.

we use raised beds for most of our veggies now. this way we have metal posts in the corners and chicken wire around the perimeter. AND when the heat beats down, we place a non-woven fabric (remay) over top to protect them. we are STILL getting 1 lb tomatoes every day!.

I was going to suggest fertilizer also. Heat is very hard on plants (and people) so keep watering them. We have the same problem and after fertilizing they looked better.
