Depends upon the variety. Some are spaced as much as four feet apart.

      Gracie,

If you know where the squirrel entered, set a rat trap outside the entry point, baited with peanut butter lightly smeared on the trap, to lure him out of your house.

If you can access his inside location, set the trap there.

You'll need to act quickly, before there are baby squirrels. Squirrels can be very damaging to trusses, wiring, etc.

If you can't manage this yourself, you'll have to pay for an exterminator who will guarantee rapid results, in writing.

Once the squirrel(s) are out, install heavy duty "Hardware Cloth" (a heavy wire mesh) securely, with screws, to prevent re-entry.

You could use a trap and then move the live squirrel to a location far from your house. Then, find the entrance and fix it. You can rent a trap from rental stores. Much cheaper than an exterminator and much nicer for the squirrel.
