How to stop tomatoes from getting tall and lanky when growing your own

The last two years I've planted my tomatoes and each year they just stretch up and don't bulk out at the bottom. Any suggestions? I've got them in a 3-shelf
greenhouse and turn the plants regularly to help with evening out the growth.

Janet, Thanks for the info. I already knew about trimming the plants after they are growing in the garden, as I do this every year. I just have trouble with them after I've transplanted them and before going in the garden.

There are two types if tomato plants - terminate and indeterminate. The former grow to a fixed height and no further. The later continue to grow throughout the season putting out new blossoms as they grow. Look for terminate varieties or patio-type plants next year.

Do the terminate types not get so leggy in the early stages? I don't have a lot of options on where they are for growing purposes, but they do have a greenhouse with grow lights and also an East facing window right behind them.

Are you fertilizing your plants too much or with the right fertilizer? I use a fertilizer for tomato plants.

I don't use any fertilizer on my young plants. They do have some included in the potting soil though.

How many hours of light are they getting a day? They need atleast 6 full sun hours to do well.

Usually they get at least 8 or more hours of sun or grow light a day.

On overcast days I turned the grow light on, otherwise there's plenty of light coming in from the east. I checked my tomato packets and one is terminate and the other is indeterminate. They both get really leggy and reach the top of the greenhouse roof before they get sturdy on the bottom.

I have to say I'm stumped. They do get a bit taller than sturdy for w while but do even out ( sort of like a kid!)
