Hi Patricia, when tomatoes are leggy it's because they don't get not enough direct sunlight.

There are two kinds of tomato plants - determinate and indeterminate - I believe it's the determinate that get tall and lanky - talk with a nursery that knows

Hi Patricia. I have been gardening for many years. I have learned what works and what doesn't. Here's what I recommend for you. Make a mix of equal parts of top soil, manure and sand. I use the sand for water retention. I also save coffee grounds all winter and spread them out where my tomato plants will eventually be planted. The coffee grounds provide the acidity that tomato plants love. Begin by planting your tomato plants deep. Tomato plants love hot sultry weather so plant them accordingly. I use a soaker hose to water my garden. This way the roots get the water. I do not water the leafs. And, last thing, I pollinate my plants. We don't have many bees these last few years. So they are not pollinating like they used to. It's so easy to go out a jiggle my tomato plants every couple days. Ever so gently so that the pollen falls from one blossom and on to another. I hope this helps you Patricia. Good luck with your garden.

It can also be too much nitrogen-goes to the leaves and green parts.

You may have to pinch off the suckers. They keep tomatoes growing but not producing enough fruit. Don't over fertilize them either, that will give you more vine than fruit
