You may have "black spot" on your tomatoes. Try putting a tablespoon of epsom salts around each plant, scratched in to the soil, then watered. Next year, plant some clean, washed, crushed eggshells in each hole, with a T. Of Epsom salt and your fertilizer, when planting. Given the summer heat, it's always better to water tomatoes using soaker hoses laid beneath black plastic. Pin it down, then poke some holes in the plastic to permit heat to escape. Cut 5" "X" shapes in the plastic, into which you plant your tomatoes and basil (makes for stronger tomato plants). Close the "X" and weight it in at least 2 places with small rocks.

You do not need to clean and/or wash the egg shells, just let them air dry then crush them. I have always used egg shells around my plants {tomatoes, egg plants, peppers, cabbage, kohlrabi, squash, melons of all kinds, etc., etc.} and none of them have been washed. The egg shells put calcium in the ground for the plants to utilize and washing them would wash away some of the calcium. I grow 2 large beautiful gardens every year and have for the last 55+ years, and all my neighbors say they've never seen such large produce and is so delicious.

Do not use black plastic in your garden, when it rains the plastic will not let the water go through to the ground, it just sits on top of the plastic and can cause the stems on the plants to rot. Use straw, make it about 3" deep, then at the end of the growing season, remove all your soaker hoses from underneath the straw and till the straw into the soil. It makes great compost over the fall, winter, early cold spring, and helps retain the moisture for the plants during the summer. Black plastic should only be used only to kill out weeds, grasses, etc., then removed to till up an area for planting.
