The quality of your soil makes a difference along with consistent watering.
I would add one other thing to your answer, consider Googling "companion plants", this will naturally repel pests in you garden by telling you what to plant with your tomatoes.
You also have to consider the length of time you will have for your tomatoes to grow and harvest time. I live in a cold climate with a shorter growing season. I plant around or after Memorial Day--and I need to start harvesting in August. I buy plants that have the shortest growing season and I buy bigger, more established plants. I also look for plants that are resistant to disease. I usually buy Early Girl and Celebrity and most often have a huge tomato harvest! I am able to leave tomatoes on the vine into September and let them begin changing color but if I know there will be cold temps and frost I pull them off and keep them in my heated garage--even the green ones--until they ripen. Today is October 14--I have 3 tomatoes left to eat!!
