Eclectic Playroom/Office Before and After

Have you ever had a space that was used regularly but was just neglected? Our playroom/office is that space for us! It needed to serve as a play space (for a seven year old) and an office for me. After quite a bit of work (purging, reorganizing, DIYing, etc.), we now have a space that is MUCH better than before and is actually a space that feels calming instead of crazy!
BEFORE: Embarrassing, right?!
BEFORE: Just clutter everywhere!
The first thing I did with this space was PURGE. Toys that were too young for my little guy were given away, furniture was sold on Craigslist and artwork (which is so hard to purge) was gone through and organized.

The shelves were emptied and cleaned. Then, all the books were gone through.

Overall, I just purged and organized the whole space. That allowed me to really see what the space could use.
I mainly shopped the house for decor. Pillows and a furry rug were dropped on the fireplace corner to create a space to sit. Another seating space with lamp creates a reading space. And the pillows on the floor just make it feel cozy.

Let's be honest, this is how it looks on a good day. We have playdates often and the boys tend to build forts in this area. So, it's a good fort building space too!
A few plants were brought in to help brighten the space. The blanket ladder is a DIY, find the project here. It was a super simple project, basically five dollars and five minutes. You an beat that, right?!

Eventually, I want to take out the paneling, but time and budget were a factor in deciding to keep it right now.
A gallery wall of my kiddo's artwork has been started in the corner by the swing. He feels so proud when we add a piece to the space.

The hanging planter is a DIY. You can see the tutorial here. I think it helps draw the eye a bit from all the wood.

Overall, a major cleaning and purging did wonders. I really tried to think about how we use the space and what our needs were when we were freshening the space up. I think that's important to think about in any space! Eventually, I have big plans for this space but for now, it's working for our family and is so much better than before!
