We renovated my daughter's bedroom last Spring as a birthday gift to my daughter (we had a Disney trip planned but had to cancel due to COVID restrictions). As part of that renovation, my daughter wanted a desk for her room to do schoolwork and since she is distance learning for the foreseeable future, it was the perfect time to add a desk to her bedroom. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a new desk, so I searched Facebook Marketplace for a desk with a hutch that I could fix up for my daughter. I found the perfect one for $60! A solid wood, sturdy desk with minimal wear and tear.

Here is an abbreviated description of how I completed the makeover of the desk, for full details and more pictures, head to my blog post, linked at the bottom of this post.

There was some damage to the beadboard on the back of the hutch, so I bought a new sheet of beadboard at Home Depot. I removed the damaged beadboard, which had been stapled on.

Next, I cut the new sheet of beadboard to size, and attached it to the back of the hutch.

Next it was time to fill some dings in the wood that had been made by the previous owner. I used wood filer to fill in any dents in the wood and let it dry completely, and then I sanded the desk.

The original desk had a pullout keyboard tray, which my daughter doesn't need since she uses a laptop and doesn't have a separate keyboard. So, I decided to convert that tray into drawer so she'd have another place to store papers and pens/pencils.

I used 1x3 boards to build the drawer onto the existing keyboard tray. I also added some cove molding as a pencil tray at the front portion of the drawer.

I sanded the desk one last time to remove any additional imperfections or old oils, and then painted with white paint.

Once the paint had completely dried, I added new drawer and cabinet pulls, and reattached all the desk components. We then moved the desk into its new location in my daughter's room.

We added some of her items and some new decor and it now is the perfect desk for my tween daughter!
