Sad to Sophisticated Desk.

You probably can't tell from the before picture, the varnish is flaking off and the stain has faded from the sun, taking away all the richness the wood once had. But the desk has great lines so it is worth working on.

Instead of going shabby chic I wanted to go sophisticated on this one.
The beautiful wood has turned an odd shade of orange, poor thing.
First step, stripping down the top. I use a chemical stripper so I make sure to wear the appropriate protective gear including a respirator mask
The drawer have some nice detail so I had to be more careful stripping these down
I sanded the desk down and put a coat of primer on.
I decided to not do chalk paint on this one because I feel black chalk paint does not get black enough for my taste. I actually used Rustoleum Satin black spray paint.
I think I used about 3 spray cans of paint.
The old hardware left its own imprint so I was kind of forced to use the old hardware again. You can see how much the wood faded, and how it didn't under the hardware. I used a English chestnut stain for the top and drawers.
Stained parts were waxed at the end to give it a shine and to protect the wood.
This desk can be masculine and feminine, my client loved it.

I love you used the black/black on it and I wouldn't have known how lovely chestnut is if I hadn't seen your post. Thanks for the inspiration.
