A picture of the area in question would be helpful.
When I lived in an apartment in Silicon Valley, I had an office in my living room along the large floor to ceiling sliding doors across the wall. I didn't want to block my view either. So I got a large glass and metal desk. I put my office at the end of my galley kitchen, so I had a wall to the right of the desk to put a long low bookcase to the right of the desk for my printer, paper supplies etc. I also had just enough room to put one of those skinny tower bookcases behind me between the kitchen and living room for all my reference books.
I have also seen people turn a large closet into an office. And also a large cabinet can be made into a mini office, that you can close up at night.
As to the wires, get some of that round hose material and feed all your cables down through it to hide.... Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Split-Wire-Loom-Tubing-Color/dp/B00T56QWBQ/ref=sr_1_fkmr3_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1518195688&sr=8-4-fkmr3&keywords=hose+to+hide+wires+in+white you can zip tie it to one of the desk legs.
I purchased a tiny fold up desk for ours. I do not have the lap top on it, but i could if I wanted to do it there. It takes up only 24 inches and closes or to open pull down a shelf to use and sit at with a chair. I do all our bills there and correspondense. We had to downsize when we sold our large home and bought a single wide mobile home. I know how you feel.

You can add a small desk and pretty chair. Keep your office supplies in a decorative bench or hutch/armoir. An old hutch would look beautiful in the room.
