I've never done a home makeover before and just got my hands on a decent mobile. I already have ideas for my bedrooms but I'm not sure what I should do with the kitchen, bathroom, laundry space, and the living room. If you have any tips and or ideas please let me know (: thank you

This project is going to be so much fun! Do you want the tub? If not - if you totally removed it, redid the floor, and installed a glass door, you'd have a very decently sized shower!

That does sound like a nice idea but I have a little girl who will need the bath tub for bath time.

I admire your initiative, but whatever you do, research every part of your project online. There are many resources on the internet.

    You can start here:

Good luck, take lots of photos, keep detailed notes and let us know how you did.

BTW. I read about a woman with three teenagers in Arkansas who desperately needed a home for her family on the cheap and she and those three kids totally built their house by watching YouTube videos. The only thing she contracted out or had someone do for her were things like electrical wiring and grading of the property. If she can do a two-story brick house, you can do this easily.

Hi Lala Lia, I am also in the process of rehabing a newly purchased 1993 mobile home. The ceiling in your kitchen looks like mine. I hate how it juts out from the wall. For one thing, a light fixture directly on a sloped ceiling looks odd. I will be replacing mine with a hanging light, for example http://www.homedepot.com/b/Lighting-Ceiling-Fans-Hanging-Lights/N-5yc1vZc7nrZ7

Do you have a rehab store in your area? Also, keep an eye on craigslist. Free or cheap! I bought a brand new bathroom vanity for $50 from someone that cut out the spots for piping so they could not return it. New is $150. I also found a vanity top that included the sink and the faucet for $25! You would not know it was used. The top is a little bigger than the vanity, so I plan to add extra storage on each side. We never have enough storage!

Are you happy with your flooring? I bought linolium at Home Depot for my entire 12x65 mobile for $340. The adhesive was over half of that cost. We installed it ourselves. They will cut it for you at the store, as long as the cuts stay at the 12 feet wide. All of my flooring needed to be replaced, and this was the cheapest solution for me until I can afford to change it.

Are you happy with the bathroom layout? I would put a solid waterproof wall where the shelves are facing the tub. Do you have an exhaust fan in the bathroom? If not, you will need one. I have the light and exhaust fan https://www.lowes.com/pd/Broan-2-5-Sones-50-Cfm-White-Bathroom-Fan-Incandescent-Room-Light-Only/1076123 Is there any water damage on the walls surrounding your tub? To clean your tub, you can make a paste from vinegar and baking soda. Let it set for an hour and wash off. Take off the old calking around the tub and re-caulk it. The bathroom window will need to be replaced. Is the toilet leaking? You may have floor damage.

The laundry room. I would take down the walls and put up new ones. Paint the wall and put up either a cupboard for enclosed storage or the shelving unit shelves http://www.homedepot.com/p/ClosetMaid-SuperSlide-48-in-W-x-12-in-D-White-Ventilated-Wire-Shelf-4714/100043835

For the kitchen, if you want to keep your counter tops, you could fill on the lines with grout, then repaint. There's more to it than what I've written, so you need to research it. I plan to use Unicorn Spit on mine! There's more I could write, so if you want to contact me, go ahead. I am far from any expert! Still learning all of this myself. But I own my own home with now mortage. Good luck!

Here is the link to Unicorn Spit on Hometalk with the instructions on "spitting" the counters. http://www.hometalk.com/michellenicole/posts Michelle also has a Facebook page and a web site. Both have tons of info! If this link does not work, just do a search on Facebook for Unicorn Spit. https://www.facebook.com/UnicornSpit/?hc_ref=... And she is on https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBANZ5badZLi... Also, I plan to Spit my ugly couch as close to emerald green as possible. :) BTW, she sells Zia Teal. As for counter colors, since you need to seal the spit after it is dried with an oil based gloss (info on her site), you may want to have more than one color on your counters. I would go with a light teal on walls, darker teal and at least white on counters and white cabinets. There is a lot of prep work before the counters can be painted. I would love to see what you come up with!

Did you know, that no interior mobile home walls in older homes are support walls? So you can change the footprint of the rooms really easy. Open up a kitchen to a livingroom, eliminate the barriers to a dining room, etc. You can use a wheeled island for versatility in the kitchen. , or create a storage island with stools where a wall was. Remember the interior walls are not usually 2x 4 so be careful on weight on side walls. I like glass tile back splashes. Floors can be anything you like. You can replace kitchen cabinets with those for houses. If you retain original cabinets I'd stay away from heavy counter tops (marble quartz) as the originals are just front and sides screwed to walls. Counter tops are just set on top of cabinets and screwed from bottom. So unscrew and pull up with hammer for persuasion. Home depot or Lowes make laminate tops to order. Their decorators know their stuff, like over hang issues etc. Ceilings can be replaced with either mobile home ceiling tiles from only mobile home dealers,or you can use ultra thin drywall but you have to glue and screw on each truss to support the weight. You can put in modern lights at the same time, but make sure you use trusses for support. If the tub is n good shape just replace the side walls with new fiberglass kit, and get good caulk. They have built in shelves. Otherwise you have a window issue, which becomes a siding issue. Side walls are paneling, they are stapled on with thousands of staples (arghhh) but can be replaced with new paneling or drywall (but then you have to mud and do finish sanding messy!)

I would definitely place a shower wall insert in there; and that way, you could use the shelving on the vanity side to reduce clutter..... be aware; depending on the age and/or model of the home, the sizes of everything is not standard; showers, doors, etc are specific to mobile homes. just keep it in mind as you are looking and buying things, as it may be a bigger job to make them fit.

Just a few more ideas to the excellent list above:

    • Laundry: consider a stacking washer/dryer set. The extra space will give you enough room for a laundry closet.
    • Kitchen counters: I don't have a good experience with pre-made countertops because water tends to infiltrate the particle board which leads to swelling and rot. I suggest instead to layer two 1/2 inch plywood (glued and screwed together) then place 12X24 porcelain tiles on top. You can have some that look like granite, marble, or slate. They are cheaper, lighter, easier to install, easier to replace if you prefer another look.
    • Mold (especially black mold) would be my biggest concern, especially in the bathroom, laundry room, and kitchen. For the bathroom, when you remove the paneling, inspect the studs for traces of mold. Remediation is easy: spray or "paint" undiluted bleach (wear a mask) and let it sit for 15 minutes. Rinse with a wet cloth and let dry overnight.
    • As mentioned previously, install fan in the bathroom and in the laundry room. Buy a larger size than needed so that you have a faster air exchange rate. Minimum is 3 complete changes per hour but I would aim for more. You can also automate the fan based on the humidity level. There are switches for that in any of the big box renovation stores.
