I have a mix of maple and dark very traditional furniture In an open great room floorplan. Love the new lighter woods of the Farmhouse Look but I am confused how to add or replace pieces without making a big jumbled mess of it all???

You can paint a few pieces to get a farmhouse feeling and add farmhouse decorating. Heres one way to paint the furniture. http://cherishedbliss.com/how-to-get-a-farmhouse-style-finish/

Lift. Anything that is close to the floor, put legs on it. For farmhouse look, no wood should be much darker than your wood floor.

I have an old Hoosier cabinet, 1922, that has no antique value except to me. The last time it was redone, four years ago, it was stained and sealed in its original color (oak, I think). I almost have the nerve to redo it with cream chalk paint with some other colors for distressing underneath in places. I might even do the pull out enamel shelf in Unicorn SPiT, just because it's mine and I think I will love it. I just got some veggie styled canisters, I'm working on a rolling pin rack, and a big Market sign is now hanging on the kitchen wall and the kitchen is open to the family room, so Farmhouse is sneaking into there, too. Best wishes for your decisions 😇 Also, go Goodwill type shopping for a couple of farmhouse pictures or phrases and try those out in your great room. See if them make you happy or distressed. Go with happy things!

just mix away until you get a balanced look...not all dark in one area. Consider adding some touches of metal too.

Paint a few pieces of furniture to give them the lighter farmhouse look and then add them to your room. That will help bring in the look you are trying to achieve.

If you have wood pieces it is fairly easy to strip them to restain them a lighter wood color. But painting is a lot easier. We have a mix of woods, some dark, some light, and it works OK. I tool a short, two-drawer dresser, painted it and conditioned the top and the drawer front. The wood on that piece was two different typed, so the maple conditioning turned out lighter on some places than others. It still looks nice and I get a lot of compliments on it
