You will have to paint it.

You can also put 1/4 inch sheetrock over it. I did that in my girl's room and then painted it. Or you can just paint if like Janet suggested.

If the paneling has grooves you can fill them with drywall patching compound. Once dry light go over with a damp sponge to smooth them out. Prime the paneling with a good stain blocking primer like Zinsser 123. Them paint with your color.

Since its been painted and still looks like paneling and the work cutting around lots of Windows, cabinetry and a built in table for the sheetrock, I believe I'm going to make an honest effort to try the compound. I'll let you know how that goes. Thanks so much for your ideas!

We painted our paneling about 10 years ago (have painted it three times altogether) and we don't even notice that it looks like paneling....how long ago did you paint your paneling? We thought of putting something in the grooves and I believe they make a sort of wall paper you can use to cover paneling but just decided to paint it.....I even like the grooves in the walls.
