How to decorate with these curtains (medium grey)

Hubby picked up these beautiful, high quality curtains at a clearance section for $10 per panel. They are a medium grey. The dresser is Ikea in black/brown and we have 2 dressers, bed frame and night stands in this set. The bedroom is small (had to sell my king bed when we moved in).
Now, I LOVE LOVE LOVE these curtains but have no idea how to decorate with such a bold pattern. I am looking for idea's on everything... paint colour, bedding, artwork, lighting etc...
Thanks!!!

Your curtains are a great find!! I made curtains (and throw pillows & re-covered an ottoman & footstool) with a similar fabric when I redecorated my family room last March. You can see my blog post about it here: http://www.contentedinwestlafayette.blogspot.com/2013/04/family-room-redecoration.html Since the fabric is a bold pattern, I would go neutral with accents for your bedding. Find artwork that you love and it will fit just fine :) On my computer the curtain color looks gray which I consider a neutral so ANY paint color should be fine.

Wow those are great! Your man deserves an at-a-boy for snagging these! How many do you have? Maybe you hang them from the ceiling at the corners of your bed (and tie them up like bed curtains) or perhaps hang them on a bar (you could use electrical pipe and fittings or pvc painted espresso) a few feet out from the headboard and then drape them loosly back toward the headboard and then let them hang behind the bed? They would create a magical area for the bed.

@Moxie love the idea but the bed can't go in front of the window, otherwise we can't get into our closet easily. Thx

I would paint the room the same hue as the curtains [very light creamy tan], or do a very light icy blue, icy blue sheets with a crisp white blanket/quilt or comforter. Add accent pieces in silver, picture frames in silver and the dark wood.

@Natasha J Thx, was thinking about doing the walls a few shades lighter, or the same shade on the bottom half and the lighter on the top.

The colors are neutral; therefore, you can use any colors...just depends on what kind of a mood you want in the bedroom. I would add a "pop" of color with corals and gold/yellow. If you are concerned that the curtains are too bold, paint the walls a similar color of the curtains. Pull the white out of the curtains with bedding, lamps etc. Use the coral and gold/yellow in accessories, pictures, throw pillows to add color. The feeling to your bedroom would be calming and elegant with a "pop" of color. May consider adding minimal black since this potentiates any colors.

Your husband got a great deal on those curtains, they're beautiful! I think Natasha's got you covered with her decorating ideas. We have ice blue walls in our bedroom; very easy on the eyes at the end of the day. Have fun decorating your new space! Val

    What is your favorit color?
  • Janis Hill Janis Hill on Jan 12, 2014
Your husband has excellent taste! Take one panel with you and match the lighter color to a paint chip - then go down to the next darkest color. You don't want your beautiful drapes to blend, but to compliment the walls. See photo. Next you need to determine what your personal style it. Is it contemporary, traditional, country, eclectic, casual chic, or something in between? Take this test to figure that part out, then let me know that and what your favorite color is and we'll go from there. I have some great ideas already!

@Janis Hill Thanks, Sometimes hubby surprises me... I don't see a link to the test, and I am interested in seeing my "style"! Thx

I wasn't thinking of the curtains going on the window; it's so hard to explain an idea in words lol. Maybe I misunderstood your question, I'm sorry -- what ever you do I hope it brings you smiles : )

You don't see it because I failed to include it! lol I'll try again...and this time I will include the link! http://www.bhg.com/decorating/decorating-style/quiz/
  • I did a room in light grey for a brighten up the room, I also did one wall in a medium grey. I found the color of my curtians and they mixed these to forms of this in shades I wanted. I carried paint chips with me. Frames can match the furniture/silver/white/destressed, your taste for decor. You can do this!

    Did you take the test?

I'd love to see your finished room. Shades of gray are beautiful and the dresser and curtains go great together. Keep the colors neutral and then smack a red accent with pillows. Show stopper with a side of smiles!

Rachelle, now that you know your style what is your favorite color?
    • Rachelle Iredale Rachelle Iredale on Jan 16, 2014
@Janis Hill Favourite colour depends on shades... I like "earthy" colours like greens, browns, tans, oranges etc. My kitchen is a dark green, my bathroom is burnt orange, my spare room is blue (not a favourite colour, will probably change that... we have only lived in this house for 6 months) my living / dining room is a taupe colour. I love white/black and greys but have never decorated with them... probably why I am stumped with these curtains. I have been looking at paint chips and thinking maybe a pale yellow or sage green paint and grey bedding but not sure... have also thought of painting the bottom half the walls the colour of the curtains and the top half a few shades lighter and picking bedding with colour. I am not a pink / purple person but I was drawn to them with these curtains.... hubby isn't on board with that, LOL! Something I worry about is making the room seem even smaller then it is...

Match the paint to the curtains, then would buy a comforter, etc. that is very close to that shade of gray and then add both green and orange. Add Euro shams and a quilt in orange, lamp shades or candles, a vase. So long as the secondary color is repeated 3 times. A green plant in the room would be perfect.

@Janis Hill thank you so much, I didn't know what to expect when I came to this site and have been blown away by the kindness of the people here. I like the idea of the bedding matching the grey and then having pops of colour with pillows, lamps etc. Why does it need to repeat 3 times? What if it's more?
  • Janis Hill Janis Hill on Jan 17, 2014
Just don't over do it. Simple is usually more eye pleasing: especially in a bedroom. It is more eye pleasing to use odd numbers, 3, 5, 7, etc. Say you use 2 Euro pillows and a quilt or throw across the foot of the bed, then you add orange lamp shades. Almost all the orange is concentrated in one are. An orange chair would bring balance to the room, but you end up with 6 orange items. Add a small vase or an orange candle in a clear holder or even flowers to the top of the piece of furniture that is on the other side of the room. It will add balance without overwhelming.
