I am trying to match brick on my home built in 1956.

The bricklayer working with me says the really smooth original brick is hard to match in size and he found some "distressed" brick that is the same size. It will be painted over but the 2 brick textures are very different. Is it really that hard to find smooth brick that would fit? I feel like he is not "shooting me straight". Is it that I should look harder?

Locate a brick yard that recycles brick from old buildings within your area. There are many that are doing this all over.

William has the only real answer! During that time frame ALL specialty bricks contained asbestos. (My dad was a builder till he passed) It would be almost impossible to make one today. Finding an old one is your only hope. SORRY.

Not a great idea to paint brick outdoors, except white wash...paint seals in damp and mold, brick needs to breathe

Check on the internet for old brick

And sometimes the store that sells what Habitat for Humanity has in excess has older building things, maybe even brick

And if you aired on FaceBook, see if there is a local " Buy, sell anything" page for your area.

Put up an ISO..in search of.....message...someone may have what you need. I would explore a bit before using brick that does not match, because even if others do not notice, YOU will.

And if you sell, and the difference is obvious, it can lower the value.

Also call local demolition companies, some of them will rescue old brick from their demolitions. Good luck!

In our area, homeowners are using a mixture of stones and brick. So if you need bricks in a certain area, remove the corners or entryway on your house for replacement bricks, then use stones on the corners or entryway. Very attractive and adds lots of class to older homes.
