Rerranging small rooms joined

We have a lot of stuff. I just want it to look nice in here. I'd like to know where to place the bed and move the tv that's on the wall, the pink dresser, and kitchen table. Someone please help. This is driving me nanners. My husband says it's fine. I do not, and no matter how much I pick up and clean, it still looks trashy. Our home has never been like this. Of course we always had a larger home. Any suggestions will help. Thank you

I think most of us find ourselves in this type situation, to much stuff and not enough room. Have you gone through all the clothes and items you are showing? If you haven't, you should. Ask yourself if you really have to have or need these items. Once you have thinned some of your items down, you might look into a closet system where you can put clothes, etc in that. If that is out of your budget, put shelving in the closet and store your clothing and items in that using wash baskets or other bins or boxes. Create some storage under the bed, which you may have to raise up to get the storage under. Get a different dresser with more storage or a smaller one to add to the one you have and paint it the color you want. Or get a bedside table with drawers or storage. To pretty up your room, get a bedspread/coverlet to cover the sides of your bed or a bed skirt or both. Add a pretty rug or a throw rug. Maybe finales to your bed posts. If you can reposition your bed, do so, or try to if possible. No closet doors, get a pretty curtain to hide the closet. If you have a window, try a small curtain or even window privacy film. Nothing has to be matchy, matchy but the colors and patterns need to go together. Look on the internet or magazines for ideas. As an FYI, I am currently going thru the same thing, having a room so piled up with "stuff" and clothes you can hardly walk in it. I have had to be ruthless in getting rid of things or the room will never be what I have envisioned. I wish you well and good luck. I hope some of this helps.

Wow, Elizabeth, I see what you mean! Apparently your husband is okay with the clutter or simply doesn't want to deal with it.

First, how do you use this room? Does someone live in the room or is it an extra room for company? I can't tell the layout from your photos and with all the extra stuff, it's difficult to determine the wall spaces.

Next, I think you need to decide what is needed and what can be discarded. Purge what you can. I know it isn't easy, I'm trying to purge stuff myself... it's difficult, time consuming and at times, heart wrenching. I promise it will be enlightening, though!

It's recommended that you make three collections as you sort through things. A "Keep" pile, a "trash" pile and a "donate" pile. Better yet, put the trash in a trash bag so you can't see it anymore and the donate stuff in another bag or box, (label it so you know what it's for without digging through it again) that you can give away and don't go back through it before sending to someone.

Once the stuff is out of the way, including what you want to keep, try arranging the furniture before bringing the clothing and other things back into the room. Rehang the TV after you determine the layout. You might need a larger dresser.

You may need more rod space, I suggest adding a rod above the one that is there. I have a double rod in my closet and it works great for shirts! It would also work for short skirts and shorts, too.

    Good luck!

  • Can you go through everything and make a keep, donate and trash pile? Then go through it one more time. Usually if you have too much stuff/clutter a lot of it is stuff you may not have used for quite some time! I would also maybe making a curtain to cover the clothing that is on the long hanger. Group things that go together so it is easier to find them. Look for some storage solutions at Target, Walmart or Ikea with drawers or cubes to put things in. I would also look at maybe some pull out drawers or storage tubs for under the bed.

I agree that the place to start is by doing a HARD purge! Way too much "stuff" for the space. From there, designate a specific space to hanging storage. Curtain or wall it off so everything is hidden. Find drawer or shelf storage that is the appropriate size for your things and the space. Even consider placing 2 dressers on top of each other to utilize vertical storage.

Little things add up also. They sell bed frames that are elevated higher then most bed frames. This can more then double the amount of storage space under your bed.

But you need to start with decluttering. Less can be more. Anything that doesn't fit, is broken or you haven't used in the last year or two should be either thrown out, donated or put in it's appropriate place.

I find that most clutter is just stuff we were too lazy to put away.

Can you go through the things little by little each day and make a toss, donate, and keep pile. Over time you will get through it all and make it more manageable to rearrange

Hi! As I downsize I have learned that I have to limit the stuff so I can organize in the space I have to work with. We went from over 2400 square feet, a full attic and a storage building to 1500 square feet, two less bedrooms and no extra storage. Our attic is tiny, too. I am still decluttering to make it work. The easy stuff went quickly, but, the more I downsize, the harder it is. An area at a time, a container at a time, grouping like things together has helped me get as far as I have so far. Duplicates are easier to see when you group like things. Basically, you can't organize clutter, and are limited by the amount of space you do have. I recently went through my closet and pulled out anything I don't wear, filling up two large bags for donation. It created enough space so I can actually see what I have resulting in my wearing more things! I hope this helps!

    I'm sure you feel overwhelmed.

First figure out how you want to add more storage. It looks like you need more drawers. Also, the extra rod to hang clothes and a higher bed frame are both excellent ideas.

When you are ready to proceed take everything out of the room except the furniture. Then add the storage, and arrange the furniture to your liking.

Now go through everything you removed. Try to purge about 2/3rd's of it. Don't bring anything back into the room that you haven't use in the last year/doesn't fit or can't be stored away. Once they are gone you will never miss those things and you will be able to relax and feel good in your new space.

Purge, switch to thinner flocked hangers, double rods, utilize over the door space, add shelving or some type of storage that is ceiling to floor.

In anticipation of retirement and moving from a 5/3 4,000 sq ft home to a 2/2 1,400 with almost no closet space I have started keeping bags in the bottom of my closet. I try to go through at least 20 pieces of clothing twice a week with a critical eye. If I would not buy it today, it gets donated. If there is a stain or a bit worn, out it goes. I won't need as many "nice" things once I'm not going into the office daily.

Another thing that night make you feel better about the room is paint everything one color and store the extra mattress under the current bed. Add nice bedding and it will feel nice even if it's packed floor to ceiling.

Wow see what you mean.... when I am helping one of my disabled clients get organized and make their bedroom nice its about a place for everything, and everything in its place.

I would first start with the area you've made into a closet of sorts. Add a support to the middle of that long pole, hardware store has them. Then add another pole above it for your tops on top, and bottoms on bottom. Consider putting a shelf above the top rod for more storage for lesser used items. Then I would add a curtain rod in front of it, and get some colorful sheets to drape in front to close off the "closet".

I would raise that bed up to make a platform bed with more storage underneath, or just raise it enough so you can repurpose some old drawers on rollers to slide under the bed for storage of shoes, extra clothing. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=cheap+platform+bed+frame+full

Now you have some storage, I would hang everything up or fold and put in the dresser. Maybe repurpose the small pink one as a bedside dresser, just repaint it.

Now clear off all the surfaces, and get rid of what your not using. If its something you need to keep, put it under the bed. Clear the floor. Again purge what your not using and can let go.

Maybe add a few shelves above the dresser the same width as the dresser for your tolietries that can be organized in fabric cubes or plastic shoe boxes. If there is a bathroom off that room, consider expanding storage in there to put all the tolietries and cleaning supplies in. A shelf above the doorway can store alot. Plastic shoe boxes in the bath vanity holds a lot of things.

If you have a lot of shoes, add a behind the door shoe holder. Thrift stores usually have them.

Get some nice bedding even if its from the thrift store, I get lots of bedding for clients including sheets, comforters and even pillows. I just make sure I wash it well before using in hot water with 20 Mule Team Laundry Borax.

What is the extra mattress for? Maybe you can let the extra go. St. Vincent de Paul does pick up of donations.

Get a cord controller to feed all those wires from the TV down the wall under control. https://www.amazon.com/s?k=cord+wall+concealer&ref=nb_sb_noss_1

Give us a sketch of the floor plan with some measurements so we can help you

  • If there’s anything you feel you can get rid of, try that first. If not, study everything needed in the space and make use of your walls /vertical space for storage options like shelves or cabinets. Once the visual clutter that’s making you nuts is tidied up, rearranging should become clearer.
