Using faux brick paneling

Has anyone used the faux brick paneling (Ive seen it at Lowes for $26 for a 4x8 sheet)? If so are you happy with them? Did you paint them or leave them the color they came in? And any tips for hanging/spacing/painting etc would be appreciated!

  • This faux brick panels will work somewhat well but it depends upon where your planning to use them. They are pretty much a paper type product not wood and can warp and flex I used in a damp environment. You can paint them if you wish to change the color. Its dependent upon what area of the house your looking to install this product as to the installation methods used
  • I am just using them for an accent wall in a dining room (that is separate from kitchen area).
    • @Stacy Harper You install them pretty much like any other paneling. Ideally panel glue should be applied and tiny panel nails are used to hold them in place while the adhesive dries. If your one that may decide later on to change this look, be prepared to have a hard time removing the panels. One way around that is to simply nail a 1/4 inch drywall up over the wall and panel over it. Once you pull the panels down, you simply unscrew or pull the nails out of the 1/2 inch drywall and your back to the original where you can paint and decorate again. It is not hard or expensive to do and you do not need to mud the seams as the brick paneling will cover over the joints. Just offset the seams of the drywall from the panels.

We used them behind our stove alcove in the kitchen over plaster. What an improvement! Think I will white wash them (going to try and a left over piece first).

@Cathy W Interesting you put it in your Kitchen. We are thinking of doing the same. How easy is it to clean?

Thanks for telling me about something I have never heard of...but I looked at brick veneer on Lowe's site and it is very pretty! A friend of mine had her kitchen backsplash all the way to the ceiling done in Old Chicago. I just do not understand brick in the kitchen! I guess I am the only person who gets grime and grease in her kitchen!

My parents used them in our old house when I was a kid. It made the room look warm & inviting! Lots of luck with your project! And they still hung photos & art on them to finish off the look.

I used a far less expensive alternative from American Blinds and Wall paper. There are some fabulous textured wall coverings that look real and are a whole lot easier to change. I have used one of the brick patterns in my guest room and people have stayed there for days until they realized it was wall paper.

It is used in the movie industry all the time to quickly change out the look of a room or exterior - easy to install and looks really real as is, or painted (faux 'aged' or solid paint). I've seen it done in a den (in a private residence) on the lower half of the wall with chair rail moulding above it to hide the edge. Looked awesome and installed in a day (it was a huge room). They didn't glue, just nailed and the moulding helped keep it from 'waving' along the edge. If you do a floor to ceiling installation, I'd suggest removing your existing floor moulding and adding new on top of the veneer. Then caulk the gaps, paint the moulding and you're done!

Lisa, haven't needed to clean it! Just a weekly dusting. It is behind the stove and fridge and those are heavy! But don't anticipate any trouble when they are moved!
