Kitchen Counter Redo.

We had the world's ugliest laminate counter in our kitchen and it also had a tall bar built into it. We couldn't afford granite and wanted something more in tune with our natural setting here in the mountains of North Carolina. So....we took a chance and it turned out great.
See..ugly. We had never tried doing anything like replacing counters but had to try.
My brave husband pulled the old counter off. It was particle board and HEAVY.
Demo went fast and much easier than we thought.
We cut plywood and sealed it with waterproof stain. We used 3/4 thick.and cut it to fit with a small lip. I don't have a picture but we topped this with a sheet of cement board which is for backing tiles. Lowes told us to use it. It cuts easily and we glued it down with liquid nails.
We then laid out grey cera mic floor tiles and natural stone tiles. We tried about 7 different patterns before deciding on this.
This doesn't show the colors but just how well everything fit together.
This is showing the stone island we did at the end. We used different sizes and colors and grey grout. Since we are not expert at tiling or cutting tile we wanted to fit the stone as easily as possible and it worked out perfectly.

We grouted the edge, sanded it smooth, and stained it grey...then sealed the whole thing with a clear, waterproof sealer also from Lowes. We love it. And our friend who is a professional at tiling said we did a great job.
