Coastal Kitchen Cupboard With Reclaimed Shutter Slats

My latest DIY transformation using reclaimed shutter slats, Americana Chalky Paint and Wainscoting Wallpaper.
The final detailed top. Reclaimed shutter slats, some with little chalkboard inserts so I can write witty sayings.
The coastal vignette with many ocean-inspired pieces we have collected, along with a few HomeGoods goodies!
Like this...
Arranging the shutter slats in a pleasing pattern that mixes the colors and varies the lengths.
Shutter slat detail top completed. Cut, sanded and glued into place with carpenter's glue. No need for nails!
The before cupboard. A nice, narrow cupboard made of MDF we picked up a few years back at Jordans Furniture Clearance Center in Avon. The surface was a plasticy veneer that scratched and chipped as we walked past it a million times a day.
Sanding the edges to give the piece a bit more of a "hand-made" appearance. Nothing screams "mass-produced" like sharp, clean edges!
Americana Chalky Paint from DecoArt. Love this stuff! Doesn't leave any brush strokes, easy to clean with water, comes in yummy coastal colors. The palette I chose was inspired by the reclaimed shutters I used for the top.
Sanding the edges of the cut pieces so they have the same weathered appearance as the rest. The edges are not painted because they would have been inserted into a shutter frame.
Easy to paint a knob with chalk paint! Paint it on, make sure you get into all the little creases and holes. Wipe away what you don't want and allow to dry. Instant vintage.
Finished the entire piece with this Americana Decor Ultra-Matte Varnish. Unlike other matte varnishes that still leave a shine, this one doesn't! Perfect for vintage makeovers. To read the instructions, click the blog link below.
