Living in drawer-less misery? Why not DIY some!

Our kitchen, sigh. Done ever so poorly by a clueless house flipper. While under contract we noticed he didn't bother with kitchen drawers. What?! No drawers?! Who inflicts that kind of pain?!

We did have this blank wall though and for three and a half years I've been scheming to drawer it up.

I planned and schemed and planned and schemed, holy cow did I draw up options. (No need to have fancy software to do this either.) Here's the final design and me trying to do math to figure out where it went on the wall. Oh math.

Problem is I've currently got a bum arm, darn rotator cuff. Thankfully, the carpenters at work assembled the whole thing for me. How awesome is that?!

Be sure to come read this blog post (and many more fun ones) over on my blog Flipping the Flip as a I have a slew of great design tips for you!

Those carpenters, they hit a heart string when they offered to put French cleats on this for me, make installation a breeze. And a breeze it was!

First of course I stained and sealed it. The stain is by PureColor, an environmentally friendly water based finishing product. I used Varathane Heavy Use water based sealer.

Then it was time to install. Wow, I was so excited to finally have drawers, I could barely stand upright. Husband, level, wall cleat, a few butch WallDog screws into the studs and the cleat was ready.

Wall cleat!

And plop, easy breezy lemon squeezy, the cabinet unit was on! I used a couple more WallDog screws near the bottom to secure the unit itself to the wall. Added security, ya know.

Next the drawers went in and our new 8' long butcher block countertop! Whooie!

I'll give you one great tip of the many in my blog post -- don't waste your money on those fancy yet small and super expensive butcher block oil bottles! Use food grade mineral oil -- it's the exact same thing for far less money!

And there it is! In all its glory! Wow, having drawers now is an amazing thing! (That's our dog slobber splash blocker there on the wall under it.

In all, a couple sheets of plywood, a counter, drawer slides, some stain and sealer and the world is a much happier place! You too can change your home!

Do you have a pattern that you used when making your doggie slobber blocker? I think all of us doggie owners agree that was an ingenious idea!!! Everything looks fantastic!! Great job!! Thanks...
