Can you spot the “new” countertop??

Believe it or not, you can use contact paper to cover your old laminate countertops. This is a temporary fix because we're planning to install quartz counters, but I've been dying to try it. It is food-safe and fairly durable (if you are careful).

DIY projects don’t get much easier than contact paper, so you really have nothing to lose. I bought this contact paper on Amazon.

Materials Needed:

cleaner/degreaser (any kind)

contact paper

plastic drywall knife

scissors

BEFORE - old laminate countertop

How to Cover a Countertop with Contact Paper

1. Clean the laminate surface really well, degreasing if necessary. I just used a regular household cleaner, but you could try Krud Kutter if you need a serious degreaser.

2. Measure and cut the contact paper to fit the first sections you plan to cover. Plan for two long runs of paper to cover the full depth of countertop; this paper is not wide enough to span it.

3. I started with the front edge and the backsplash. (We had already removed the countertop to install a new pantry. I just put it on the floor to complete this project.) Try to plan for one continuous piece of contact paper. The fewer seams, the better. I didn’t align the pattern, although you could certainly try. Plan to buy an extra roll if you want to align the marble design.

4. Once the front edge and any backsplash are covered, measure out the central piece of contact paper using the longest possible continuous section. Put a few weights on the paper to position it before you start to peel off the backing. You'll need it square with the front edge or you'll end up with bubbles or a crooked seam.

5. To apply, start in one corner, making sure to apply without stretching the paper. Use a drywall taping knife wrapped in a towel to firmly smooth down the contact paper as you unpeel the backing. Working slowly, move along the length of the countertop. You’ll want to push out as many air bubbles as you possibly can while you go. I still have a couple of bubbles, but they are not in very visible places, so I can live with it.

6. The contact paper will adhere well to the laminated sides of the countertop. Use Gorilla Glue along any unfinished bottom or side edges.

That's it! Enjoy your new, faux-marble counters!

Ta-Da! A “New” Countertop

If you’re desperate for a kitchen facelift, this cheap and easy countertop update might work for you. I ballparked $40 for two rolls of contact paper, which would be needed to cover 12+ feet of countertop.

I clean this counter as usual, with regular cleaning products and no special treatment. Do not place hot pans on it though - I assume it would melt. Also, be careful with knifes and sharp tools. Once you cut or nick the surface, the contact paper will start to peel off. Otherwise, enjoy!

I also recommend a special countertop paint for another cheap and easy DIY update. Check out my original blog post for the scoop.
