Goodbye to 90's Pink Formica Benchtop

The wee unit we bought was very dated. I've undertaken to give it a face lift on a very tiny budget. I discovered brown paper can look like cork or leather. I'm excited with all its other possibilities.
This is the starting point. Stunning huh? Pink and grey was a thing back in the 90's in New Zealand.
The kitchen bench was a ghastly dated pink but I bought a roll of heavy duty brown kraft paper and got stuck in. I ripped up the kraft paper into hand-sized pieces and crumpled them up. Smoothedthem out and soaked them briefly in the glue/water mix then pasted it onto the benchtop, overlapping the pieces. The PVA dried and then I sealed it with the stain-varnish.Using watered down craft glue (PVA) 50/50, I applied ripped up pieces of Kraft paper, using the straight edges where needed on the edges. Overlap the pieces of paper. The colour is different on the opposite side so you can mix it up if you want, as I did on the floor . (Another post.)
Then I rubbed it with the black stain and wiped it off again, leaving the black stain between the edges and caught in the wrinkles. I added a strip of paper around the edge and glues that down as well, staining and varnishing that too. Then I varnished again. When it was dry I varnished it with a two pot mix epoxy varnish. Ive just done a second coat and it looks great. You could use a water-based gloss varnish too but I was given a bit of epoxy so I used it.

That looks great. I also used brown paper I bought from Lowes and did my kitchen floor with it and everyone loves how it looks and nobody believes it is only paper.
