Here's how I recently had to apply edge banding to our new melamine kitchen cupboard door.

You can find my more in depth post here, which is useful if you're altering cupboard doors on a budget or adding it to the ends of shelves.

We all know new kitchens are expensive. But did you know you can buy 2nd hand ones or cancellation kitchens cheaper, then alter them to fit your existing kitchen cupboards?

Here's what ours looked like before.

This is actually exposed MDF. Not only is it important to cover for cosmetic reasons, but to also prevent water damage.

I first cut a piece of melamine edge banding slightly bigger than what I needed, so it would be easier to work with.

Then applied contact adhesive to both the back of the tape and the raw MDF wood.

*Make sure your room is well ventilated and protected your kitchen counter from glue spillages.

After leaving for a few minutes, I lined up the tape from the bottom.

Then rasped away the excess very carefully at a 45 degree angle.

For my j pull handles, I cut around it with a junior hacksaw.

I then used a slim long rasp for the awkward spaces until smooth.

And this is what it looked like in the end.

Suggested materials:
  • Junior hacksaw
  • Set of rasps
  • Rag for rubbing away glue
