How to Get a Vintage Look on an Old Piano Stool

My neighbors were participating in our Community Garage Sale so I had to see what they were selling. They had the sweetest little piano stool but I decided to buy a few other things instead. It didn’t sell so it was given to me.
The stool cried out for a vintage look which to me means milk paint.   I love how you never know what milk paint is going to do.  I wiped the piece down with a solution of white cleaning vinegar and water to clean it.
Once it was dry I started painting the first layer of paint in a color called buttermilk. It is a nice neutral beige color.  I didn’t add anything to the mixture to prevent chipping.  I wanted the paint to do all of the work for me.  I painted the entire stool in this color.  And I allowed it to dry completely.
The next layer of paint, also milk paint is a cream color.  For this layer, I didn’t worry about covering the whole stool.  When the paint dried it started chipping which creates the vintage look.
I took 0000 steel wool and lightly sanded the stool to remove the flaking pieces of paint.  To protect the paint finish the stool was waxed with a clear wax and buffed.  I waited a few days and went back over it again, waxing and buffing it.
This paint technique really looks so good on an older piece of furniture.    And for that matter newer pieces also.
