Hutch Makeover
I love this style of hutch and you don’t see too many of these around, so when I saw this at our local thrift store, I grabbed it! It’s tall and elegant and is perfect for a kitchen or dining room.
It’s always great when a hutch comes in two pieces. While this was a great color, I wanted to create a fresh, coastal look.
The drawer was a bit messed up, but my husband fixed it. The runner was missing on the side, so he created a groove with a router tool so that the drawer could function.
He clamped the wood in place using these clamps I bought On Amazon.
He used a router, which created a deep groove for the bottom of the drawer to sit.
He attached the straight bit to the router which created the line. You can find the router and bits at Harbour Freight.
It makes a perfect groove.
It’s amazing! The drawer was broken and didn’t function, now it’s brand new and ready to go!
my Husband took the top off so I could sand it. It was easy to remove. It was also easier to paint. Below I’m demonstrating how I sanded the top part using a palm sander with 60 grit sandpaper.
You can find these sanders and sand paper in any hardware store or on Amazon. They range from around $20 and the sandpaper starts around $4 for about 8 discs.
Make sure to sand outside as it makes quite a mess.
this is the facade of the drawer. Here I am using a regular paint brush with nylon bristles. Always paint in the direction of the wood grain and paint thin coats, that way you won’t have too many brush strokes.
Here is the finished piece! I love how it turned out! I used an echo friendly paint called putty, which is a perfect coastal color. Having a neutral color works great in any space. The sanded top is a nice contrast.
It came out just beautiful! I love the transformation.
I ordered these cute pumpkin knobs from Amazon. They are perfect for this piece.
The shelves have slots for displaying your dishes and is the perfect storage place for them.
While I love the clean lines of this piece, the curves on top give it character. You can also give it more character by distressing it bringing out more of the details.
After using the wax, the details come out even more! I used varathane wax. It’s smooth and smells amazing! You can find it at The Home Depot for under $10. It lasts a long time as you don’t need much.
This piece has the perfect sized drawer for your mats and cutlery. I’m so glad we were able to salvage it.
