I wanted to paint chickens that looked like they were in a coop on my ugly kitchen cabinets. About 20 years ago, (I can't believe it has been that long) I painted the cabinets under my sink. I had never painted pictures or objects and I carefully studied those chicken pictures in order to paint them on my cabinet doors.
I used acrylic paints and I then put about three coats of a water-based polyurethane on them. I sanded (very fine sandpaper) between each coat. They have held up all these years! About 5 years ago, I decided to paint the drawers next to the cabinet doors.
On the top two drawers I painted chicks and eggs. Again, using acrylic paint. On the next two drawers down, I wanted to paint bunnies. I tried several times and I just could not paint them.
Finally, I decided to decoupage on the bunnies and then I painted over the the pictures. I found pictures I wanted online and printed them out.
After sanding between the polyurethane coats the pictures were flush with the cabinet door and the bunnies looked painted on. The chicken coop wire I painted on using silver acrylic paint with white highlighting.
I plan to paint piglets on the next two larger cabinets to the side of the drawers. I have already found pictures from the internet to decoupage on and paint.

I posted this project for others like me who do not have a lot of artistic talent. I realize not everyone wants to paint animals on their kitchen cabinets, but an object you might want to paint, but cannot paint, you can use this decoupage trick!
