Here are a couple of photos from our project. We created a leaf with dowels and holes to fit between the original male and female sides of the table. We then stained the leaf to match the table.
We put a leaf extender on our table with two hinges, and a piece on the end with a bar that is extended when the hinged end is up. Normally it hangs down, but you can still sit on the end and put the feet/legs under if the end is not extended.
Homeroad has shared a really great tutorial for making a replacement leaf. Getting the holes lined up when drilling will be the most important part.

Rather than spoiling your existing table, you could make a small table to sit at the end of your existing table. It could be constructed like a tv snack table
and collapse down when not required or free standing permanent addition!
If you plan to always use a tablecloth over it, you could make something quite simple using ideas from above.
