I use a metal covered thin chip board mat I bought in Walmart??. it is about 18x24. I stand it behind the stovetop and it works well and cleans beautifully. Cheap!

Reverse painted glass section attached to wall is inexpensive and easily cleaned.
We stenciled our backsplash and mounted a piece of tempered glass behind the stove to protect the wall from spatters. It wasn't very expensive and cleaned up easily. We actually used this method in two different houses.
