Refinishing Our Family’s Beautiful Custom Pine Harvest Table

Our harvest table was well loved, but trashed after 7 years of meals with 4 kiddos, it was time for a redo.

We’ve shared a lot of meals on this wonderful pine trestle table

It was beautifully finished in a weathered grey stain which was common at the time and suited our home well. However, it did see lots of abuse, and permeant marker, glitter, dents and dings, and years of homework engraved into the wood.

Refinishing Process

After some research, I went with Ez Strip Paint And Varnish Remover to get rid of the old stain and clear.

It took a few coats and lots of scraping and sanding but eventually I removed all the old stuff, then I followed up with some sanding

Each section was sanded with 120 grit sandpaper and treated with a wood conditioner.

I chose a 50/50 blend of Minwax Weathered oak 270 and Provincial 211stain, to bring back the rich original feel. The table took 2-3 coats and 2 hours of dry time in between

Finish: Varathane Premium Diamond Wood Finish – 2002 Satin / Minwax Weathered oak 270 / Minwax Provincial 211

We finished it off with a few coats of Varathane Clear coat, which dries in about 30 min.

I did a light sanding on some rougher spots with a 220 grit sandpaper in between coats, to keep it smooth.

The end result looks fantastic. This harvest table looks brand new and is a much better match in our new home.
