Small Cabinet Refresh
I was given this old cabinet and decided against my initial plan for it. So instead I had a vision for it involving a hint of pink paint and thought it would be perfect to add to my daughter’s room.
This was the before. It was very dark and I wanted to lighten up the details on the doors.
First I cleaned it up and then applied a coat of primer.
I used Zinsser Bulls Eye 1‑2‑3 primer which is perfect for projects like this to produce a good seal against the dark stain.
I applied a coat of chalk paint on the doors and used Antoinette by Annie Sloan. This gave really good coverage and I applied another coat over the top with slightly watered down paint.
I used an eggshell paint in an ivory shade to paint the rest of the cabinet. This required 2-3 costs for good coverage. I then took the eggshell and painted the windows so that these would be white.
I wanted to tone down the pink paint a little so I took a fairly dry brush and added some ivory paint lightly to the edges of the doors to add a bit of detail. The chalk paint can then be sealed with a coat of clear wax using a sponge and buffed well with a lint free cloth when dry.
Finally, I used Rub n’ Buff in European gold to paint the handles. I applied a very small amount using a paintbrush.
The finished look! I love how much the paint has lightened up this piece and how soft and feminine it is now.
It’s perfect for my daughter’s room to create some more storage for small items.
I could have added some light distressing on the doors to add a bit more detail but I left it as it is for now. I’m also unsure why the handles are attached unevenly. I had intended to fix this but they would not have been easy to take off and reattach.
This was a free project using materials I already had but has been such dramatic transformation. I hope that this inspires you that you can easily take something that isn’t to your taste and adapt it to fit into your home!
