Stenciled Barstool Transformation

For me the round seat of a bar stool is just screaming out for a stencil. With shiny yellow pine seats and glossy white legs these stools needed a bit of reinvention.
I think this project has transformed the stools from dated and bland to something really striking....
Before
To begin with I turned the stools upside down and painted the legs before turning them back over and painting the seats. I then applied a very matt water based varnish over the paint and allowed it to dry.


By applying the varnish before adding the stencil designs, it is possible to quickly wipe away the stencil paint if you make a mistake as the base paint has a protective layer.


After lightly coating the back of the stencils with a spray adhesive I smoothed the stencils into position. With a bristle stencil brush which had most of the stencil paint removed from it, I applied the paint through the stencils in small circular movements.
Finally I painted one more coat of varnish on the seat.
