Ugly Yellow Cabinet Makeover-Now Pretty in Aubusson Blue

I have some really great people in my life who give me furniture. I'm blessed for sure! A neighbor gave me this ugly yellow cabinet and when the hubby went to pick it up he told me it was ugly and a piece of junk. No worries, this is usually the same thing he says every time he sees the 'before'.

I don't do much work in the winter, because it gets cold here in Illinois in the winter. I work in my garage and it's not heated (hopefully some day it will be!). We've had a nice stretch of weather lately so I figured it was time to attempt a makeover on this yellow cabinet. I'm calling it a yellow cabinet, but it's a dresser with doors and drawers on the inside on top and two drawers on the bottom.

I gave this an update using Chalk Paint™ decorative paint by Annie Sloan in Old White and Aubusson Blue. Two of my favorite Annie Sloan colors.

Here's the cabinet before. It was coated in 7 different drippy colors of paint. Paint drips, crackles, it was a mess.
I stripped and sanded 7 layers of paint off the top, then stained it a dark walnut.

OH I love this! love how it looks like one my grammy had when I was little (I'm 61 now ) and hers was a different shade of blue. Question....are the emblems on the doors carved wood pieces? I think I just might have the matching radio cabinet!

Did you sand the ugly yellow paint off first then use your chalk paints?

love this piece, my style..but..I think I would have added a stencil or something to those 2 spots in the middle of the doors, it still looks unfinished. But still very nice :) I am just a detail freakazoid :)
