Unicorn Spit Practice Piece: Boring Oak Lazy Susan
PLAIN JANE LAZY SUSAN FINALLY TAKES CENTER STAGE
(Well, technically center table ;)
Step 1:
Cleaned and degreased with TSP all-purpose heavy duty cleaner
I didn’t want to sand off all the varnish so I painted it with chalk paint so the stain would have something to adhere to
Step 2:
Once the paint was dry, I squirted random colours of the spit in a circular pattern and added a few drops of colour here and there
Then I sprayed the entire top with water (not too heavy or the stain flies right off the surface!)
Step 3:
I covered the top with a piece of plastic (I had a large roll – but a large clear bag would work as well). Then using my hand I started in the center and gently smoothed out towards the edges to remove air bubbles.
I tried not to go back over each section too much as the colours started to get muddy and lost some of their brightness when I did that.
Once I was happy with the pattern – I held one side of the plastic and my daughter held the other and we lifted it straight up and off the piece.
Step 4:
Once it was dry I used a sponge applicator and went over the top with Tung oil to seal the unicorn spit. A water-based sealer will not work as it reactivates the spit. I did two coats.
This also makes the colours appear brighter!
And voila – a fun little pop of colour!

When I saw the first picture it looked like you had decoupaged the red clovers right into the middle of the lazy susan...!

I wish I had that kind of artistic talent, CeCe! :)

Beautiful! When you and your daughter lifted the plastic did cause little peaks. I guess I’m thinking like frosting on a cake would. Did it just smooth out on its own? Thanks.
could this be done with a glass top table?
