    Hi Lina,

Perhaps you can move the table under the window, then bring in some comfortable chairs, a small table. Maybe a small cabinet to set a small TV on top. This way it can be used as a small little retreat when you're not entertaining. Then when you are, you just move the table and chairs and you're all good to go.

I'm confused because I thought I was looking at a picture of your dining room but then realized it's 2 different rooms. All I can think is, depending on the space, that you could put in a small stylish desk that can double as a buffet when you are entertaining. The chair for it can be na extra chair for your dining table.

We use ours as a larger desk. Easier to organize bills and file them.

How would you like to use it? I mean, what do you need space for? If you only need a formal dining room 2-3 times a year, I might consider putting the table and chairs in storage and using the room the other 362 days of the year as a room you'll love. Is it off the kitchen? Do you have children?

If you use a drop leaf table for dining, they are much easier to move off to the side and take up less space.

You do need to consider what space you need - crafting space, desk space, quiet space, etc. That will help you choose a direction.

Your room looks perfect to create a reading nook! A comfy chair and ottoman would provide a calm place for devotionals or meditation and encourage all potential book worms. Don’t forget a small side table and lamp! Your dining table is the perfect homework and/or craft area to bring the family closer together all year long. Have fun repurposing your room!

If you want the space for overnight guests, a Murphy bed takes up almost no room. If you want the space for an office, put in a secretary desk with a hutch on top. The desk will hide all of your mess and you can use the hutch to display dishes. You could also go the route of a long narrow desk that could double as a sideboard. Just use one of the dining chairs for the desk. There are dining room tables that actually store their leaves inside the table - so you can make them smaller when you are not using them for guests and you do not have to store the leaves!

Like others I am confused as to which dining room is yours but in a way it doesn't matter. You have to ask yourself, what need do I have for this space that IS NOT dining? For myself it would be mostly projects and I have historically used my dining room table, for sewing (cutting out patterns) for my art. . . decoupage, for playing Mah Jongg,, for doing paper work, for painting small things etc.

We put built-in bookshelves in our old (completely unused) dining room, added a chair and lamp and turned it into a library.

This may make you clinch your stomach. I cut my table in half and maintained a mechanism to reconnect the two halves when needed. I nailed a decorative cleat to the wall, drilling into the stud. Then I move the raw edge half over the cleat and screwed the table to the cleat. Then I used seating or bedroom furniture as desired. The thing it looks like the chairs may be a storage issue. Hang them on the wall and lay a plank across or something and voila, instant shelves.
