Can I replace just counter tops and keep my old cabinets?
my house was built in 1979 and I need to upgrade my kitchen but I don't have a lot of money. my cabinets are in ok shape but I need new counter tops. Do I go with Formica or some type of stone and keep the old cabinets?

Stain them with spray can paint and epoxy. Look up staining countertops on google
You can absolutely keep your old cabinets if all you want to do is replace the counters. You could also paint your cabinets if you want to freshen them up and change out the hardware.
If you feel your cabinets are just in "ok shape" I would not choose to spend a lot of money on expensive stone. You can buy some very pretty formica that will look great for less money. Another inexpensive option is to use butcher block. Here is a good example of what that could look like: https://www.hometalk.com/diy/kitchen-dining/countertops/make-your-own-beautiful-wood-countertops-for-under-200-8070156?expand_all_questions=1

Home improvement stores now have 1/4 inch thick tops for cabinets that fit right over your existing ones. You can have quartz, granite , marble or whatever you want and cover what you already use. They are less expensive that the normal counter tops of the same materials. You might want to paint or stain the cabinets and replace the hardware too for a nicer update.
