Cheapest way to update kitchen cabinet colors?

What is the quickest, cheapest way to give my kitchen cabinets a much needed update and makeover?
I have light oak cabinets (circa 1990’s) that are in bad shape. I’d love for the tops to be white/off white and the bottom (below the counters) light to medium gray). I’ve thought about chalk painting them, but recently read an article where the DIYer said they’d ‘never chalk paint their cabinets again’. I really like the look of the matte finish from the chalk paint, and also the idea of virtually no prep.

I would never matt paint a kitchen cabinet, will be hard to clean and show every grease spot, fingerprint etc. At least use a satin Kitchen & Bath paint thats easy to keep clean and adheres well at a 1/3 of the price.
Wash with TSP substitute. If you are wanting to hide the oak grain, you will need to fill the cabinet doors before priming with Zinseer B-I-N, you can use Muralo Spackle Paste or Famowood Filler applied with a plastic putty knife then sand and tack off before priming. I use a 6" foam roller for painting and a badger brush to drag off any texture. If your cabinets have a design, I would use a brush first to fill the routed area and then a roller.
