Do you want privacy between rooms (not sure what is in room taking photos from)? Are there openings on both sides of door? I was also thinking shelves, but glass shelves. Perhaps a stained glass (DIY real or faux stained glass) if you want privacy. A movable door for part time privacy (thinking barn door style). Add a counter for a mini bar. Build in wine storage, along sides or bottom.

this is a divider between the great room and kitchen. I was thinking along privacy between kitchen and great room. i like the idea of a stained glass.

Why not a counter that would extended thru from kitchen to greatroom. Could be used as a food serving area when you have family events. Or since you like the stained glass idea, something cheaper would be frosted glass with a design in the glass.

One more thought, my Mom had an opening similar to how yours looks. She had wooden painted shelves installed with glass insert doors on both sides. She used this to display some of her very colorful depression glassware.

Could you put in a counter top there and make it a snack bar? Or, what about installing a pair of shutters that you could open and close? A Roman shade would work, too.

@Judy, if you need the privacy/ keeping others from seeing a messy kitchen when entertaining, I'd keep the shutters. They go with what decor I can see of yours. If you can share more photos of your home, it would help in coming up with ideas.

I would definitely remove the shutters. Actually if it is not a load bearing wall I would probably just remove the wall completely - but them I am really an "open" concept lover.

I love the character of shutters; I think if you added something above the shutters to close off the space (roman shade, wood panel maybe with chalkboard paint) you would like the shutters better. I also like the stained glass panel insert idea..you could use plexi glass with the cheap water applied film (lowes and online has loads of patterns) -- you could also do that above the shutters...hmmmmm love to see what you end up doing.

I think i would close it and make a pantry with pull out shelves/ Put it all the way to the floor

I'm not sure what kind of a look you are going for, but I think it might look neat if you hung reclaimed / shabby chic style windows in the openings. Good luck! http://www.hometalk.com/diy/outdoor/garden/using-old-windows-in-your-decor-4279323

Yes remove the shutters. I would hang a lovely stained glass frame inside. Or two-sided glass frame with something you like pressed in-between. I would hang it not make it permanent. It would create a open feel yet slightly private. I would probably paint the paneling a lighter color also to update it.

not quite sure what you are talking about with the 2 sided glass frame idea. Have any photos?

@Judy Kelley Some of the Craft stores have picture frames that look the same front and back. Two pieces of glass. I mounted a small 50 year old flag my great grandmother hand in one. She could put anything she likes. pressed flowers , doilies, Different pictures of family that are back to back so you can see them on each side.

Since I see paint beyond the wall, If there is more paneling in the house then I would take the partition out, paint the rest of the wall, build a short pillar-like/deco "wall" if needed to fill the raw area left behind if there is one, and an island or bar to expand the kitchen or put a chair or bench to accommodate a friendly atmosphere

I would find an old window and hang in there instead of the shutters, for more privacy you could frost the glass in the window and add a design or just buy the frosted adhesive film. You could hang a grapevine wreath over the window for more design if you didn't frost the glass. Good luck.

I'm with you...I don't want to see my kitchen when i am relaxing. Have you considered a curtain lined with the same fabric, i.e., double sided?

I would definitely remove the shutters and hang an old window, either frosted or with some sort of painted design that would add much visual interest and still obstruct the view to the kitchen. If you painted the paneling a lighter version in the same family color of the wall behind it it would extend the space and make it much brighter and it would appear bigger.

I think a small quilt or simple picture on a stretched canvas to fit on the family rm. side. If you need storage you could add narrow shelves on kitchen side for spices and small decorator items. I also like the antique window ideas, shelves for display between 2 windows, paint kitchen side glass to accent pieces displayed and block view.

Since open concept living is so popular now, my feeling is not to block that opening with anything solid. Tami mentioned hanging an old window, which might be perfect, as it is enough to give you a little privacy but still allows the light to shine through. Even if you leave the glass panes clear, the kitchen view will be obscured enough. You could even paint it to add a pop of color. An example here: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/379287599844478082/
