Do I need ADIVICE?? HELP IF ANY!!

OK! So, I really would like to add a beverage~ coffee station to the kitchen, more than what I have. I have set up a space that we have used as that purpose. I wanted to try an idea and see the visual! It isn't that bad, then again It may look hideously ridiculous...
In my little galley kitchen , we have a doorway entrance off the living area and another entrance off the living area by the bar area...and bay window. No wall space for anything..so it is like a floating wall.. attached to bar. I tried adding in the hutch from dining room, blocking the doorway to the kitchen, which fits perfectly width wise. Not quite as tall as the doorway.. about 2~3 feet..but that's ok...my issue is ..what to put on the back of the hutch that faces into the LR..? I could paint it the same color as ,My LR wall and add an iron piece length and width of the hutch to act as a cover...(I hope this makes sense) While in the kitchen, it looks fine as an extension ...sitting in the LR is a little issue...do you think this could possibly work? IDK! Ever had this as a project? :))

Seems like this would be the perfect spot if you'll still have easy access into the kitchen. I'm thinking about a similar plan to get the coffee pot off the counter. Maybe the microwave too. I'm needing my countertop in this tiny apt. kitchen. I've already put the toaster in the pantry along with canisters. I have a tall sturdy Bamboo piece that has 4 shelves. I'm going to try it in the entrance to the kitchen, which is very wide. If it looks ok it would hold everything I need and free up that small counter area. I say let's do it~

I think it could work too. The only issue I have is the fact that the hutch doesn't quite cover the entire doorway height-wise. So my suggestion is that you affix a piece of panelling (beadboard perhaps) to the back of the hutch to extend it's height to cover the entire doorway. Paint it the same colour as the LR wall, hang a picture or mirror or that iron piece you mentioned on it and you'd really never know the difference. If you're concerned about how the extra height will look from the kitchen - paint it the same colour as the hutch and put a basket on top of the unit to fill the space.

Wow! The same guy built my house...what I did was put a hutch over the door on the kitchen side, and then found some big shutters at restore, painted them a few shades darker that the living room walls, and set them up to look like wall décor. I can even hang pictures and things on them using s hooks...good luck!

WHEW!!!! I was so afraid , When others read this, would have thought I had lost my mind. Because for me, this was going out of the box a little! Lol! I really am happy to have positive feedback with awesome ideas. My husband moved the hutch into the kitchen in front of the door way.. with the back of it facing into the LR area. When I am in the kitchen, I actually really like. It gives more privacy and extra space and storage. Having a coffee~~beverage station on the counter was working, but really not enough counter space for the whole idea I would love to have. With the hutch, it will hold everything together in one place. As I look at the door space from the LR area, it honestly doesn't look bad...especially once we have some paint as the LR wall color and some décor on it... Heather, that is my concern also, that the height of the hutch isn't as tall as the doorway. But I love the idea you suggested of beadboard...(My LR...is a very warm Tuscan style...) I also thought of a huge basket of greenery for the top part as a filler.... There is another way around to the kitchen...it has 2 entrances. The doorway leading between the two rooms...the floating wall where the Tv ON THEWALL) And fireplace underneath tv)..bar extension and the open area to the kitchen . So still open and plenty of room to come in and out of.... Niki, if you have pictures to share that would be awesome! Sounds like youdid great with the idea! Thanks everyone for helping out with this idea!

By the way, I "fixed" the problem at the top of the hutch where it didn't cover the top of the door by putting a mix of baskets, bird cage, and funky little canisters on the top to hide the open space...

FYI - just check for cupboard height for the coffee equipment - some appliances are very tall and require pulling out from under the cabinets or shelving for filling, brewing etc. Looks great!

I have my coffee brewer already in place on the hutch ! :)) I am thinking I will paint the hutch white to flow with the cabinets? ! I am also looking into a Keurig ...... Pretty excited !! :))) Thanks friends!

Why don't you re-purpose the hutch and add the salvage shutters like Niki Hart stated, so it looks like one piece and paint it to match your cabinets, rail added too.

Reinventing Space ~ I have decided to paint the hutch white to match my cabinets in the kitchen so that it will all flow and look as one...and add on the hutch ,the tile pieces that is on our kitchen walls to tie it all in.. My husband and I found online a piece that we are thinking about adding to the LR side view~ door way.. that will tie into the theme of our LR Tuscan décor...That piece will be somewhat similar to what Nikki did as a focal point of the room and being like a wall décor...Shutters are absolutely beautiful and still could be what I use on the panel piece if we can find them. .I would really like to find maybe even a wrought iron gate .. We found a faux brick panel that would fit into the door way perfectly and give a Tuscan old Italy feel to it...and by adding the shutters or wrought iron gate.. I think that would give it a wall décor look on it own! Then on the kitchen side I would just place fillers, like Nikki did on top of the hutch . I really recvd some great ideas and positive feedback ...I am excited to get this little project complete.. I still would like to see pics from Nikki :)))

how about a pair of bi-fold doors on the living room side...louvered or not. It would just look like a closed door. You can paint it to match the wall it's on so it isn't too obvious (unless you want it to be) On the kitchen side you can create the illusion of more height to cover the little shortfall on the hutch with some pottery, a plant, etc. If you ever change your plans the doors are easy enough to remove if you choose.

As for this hutch, I have something similar to it, I intend to paint it white, the same colour of my kitchen, then paint one side with chalkboard paint, to use it writing your shopping list.

Add railing to match top of cabinets. If the top of the china cabinet comes off bottom, add enough wood to raise it to be the height of the door, this would give room probably for the tallest of coffee pots and or microwave. Put the shutters on the back of the cabinet, good place to put those Christmas cards. Might be lucky enough for the microwave/coffee pot to both fit on the cabinet. Think I would add enough straight wood to take the curves off the china cabinet - paint the inside cabinet an accent color.

My plan is to do a coffee bar out of an old bar that is pretty beat up. My husband doesn't want me to paint it and I wouldn't if it wasn't so beat up already. I have been collecting stuff for it....by itself its nice but doesn't fit anything else in my entire house!

What exactly did you decide to do about the back of the hutch? I didn't quite understand that besides painting it. The bookcase idea might work but I wonder if it might be too heavy if loaded with books and cause the hutch to topple over?

I would find another cabinet/bookcase for the living room side. Then nothing is permanent and you have an excuse to buy more furniture! I think adding the brick is calling attention to it.

Lovely idea. Tile like your back splash would look really good. I like the bookcase idea because I'm always needing more shelves. Please post the results.

Thanks for the replies.. While my idea wasn't permanent , I tried using it in the space before I made any exact changes.. And after a month.. We were all not in favor after all.. We like the open feel better and remained with beverage bar instead... Actually ended up selling the hutch... 2 was a bit Much.. Thanks again! And it was a good idea, not for us after all ;/

How about just placing a pretty painted table across the doorway and have it as your beverage station? You would still have an open feel and be able to have the station you want. Maybe something like a sofa table that is long but narrow?
